Workshop on “Translation Studies” held at the Department of English, Premier University.
A workshop titled “Translation Studies” was held at the GEC campus of Premier University under the supervision of the Department of English Language and Literature and organized by the Dell Language Club. The workshop took place on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
The Honorable Vice-Chancellor of Premier University, Professor S. M. Nasrul Quadir, inaugurated the event as the Chief Guest. Professor Dr. Mohit Ul Alam, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Premier University, eminent Shakespearean scholar, critic, and translator, conducted the keynote session as the resource person. In his session, he shed light on the complexities, techniques, and cultural transformations involved in translating Shakespeare’s literary works. He discussed the challenges of preserving Shakespeare’s poetic rhythm and intricate metaphors in Bengali translations. He stated that a successful translation is not merely literal but a “recreation” of the spirit of the original text.
Two additional sessions were conducted by Associate Professor and NCTB textbook translator Shahnaz Parvin Sithi, and Sajed Ul Alam, an interpreter working at Seprotec, Spain.
Drawing from her practical experience, Shahnaz Parvin Sithi discussed the applied aspects of academic translation, emphasizing the importance of clarity, accuracy, and cultural context in educational translations. She presented real-life examples to illustrate her points.
Sajed Ul Alam, in his session, discussed the linguistic diversity of Swedish, Danish, and Spanish languages, along with the cultural differences associated with them. Sharing his professional experiences as an interpreter, he described the high-pressure environment of real-time interpretation. He encouraged students to develop proficiency in less commonly taught European languages, noting the growing global demand for multilingual professionals.
The special guest, Associate Professor Syed Jashim Uddin, Chairperson of the Department of English Language and Literature, delivered the closing remarks. He highlighted the contributions of the eminent Alam family to Chattogram’s education, art, literature, music, and journalism. Praising the timely initiative of the Dell Language Club, he remarked that language learning and translation studies can open new doors of opportunity for students in today’s global context. He urged club members to continue promoting language education through more diverse future events.
Finally, he expressed sincere thanks to the resource persons for their valuable insights and time, to Associate Professor Kohinur Akter for her coordination, and to Razia Sultana and Dinesh Tripura, two seventh-semester students who anchored the event, as well as all participating students, before formally concluding the program.
