Welcome to Department of English Language and Literature

Department of English Language and Literature (DELL) at Premier University offers students the opportunity to work in knowledge-based environment designed pragmatically to promote need-based education. The department has been made a hub of excellent education along with other required soft skills under the guidance of nationality and internationally renowned scholars in this field. Furthermore, it teaches the core subject-knowledge emphasizing the fundamental skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Thus, the study of literature is the study of life in all dimensions, and faculties of English Department teach their courses with those inevitable spirits. In addition, this study enables fuller comprehension and enjoyment of language and life, across a spectrum of centuries, genres, and literary traditions. Finally, students in different programs in this department, work with faculties at all levels such as taking introductory classes to organizing seminars, doing independent studies, and writing theses in graduand postgraduate levels.

DELL is aware about the problems English Departments in Bangladesh are facing. Students passing out with M.A. or B.A. (Honors) degrees in English often discover that the proficiency in English is not up to the mark. Their mastery of the subject (English Literature) is also far below expectations. The students are disappointed, and so are their teachers, and the fretting persists. The employers also find it difficult to recruit capable English graduates. DELL has taken a huge stride forward to build up the career of the students by instilling the most basic requirements in various job sectors. For example, even before the mainstream courses begin, DELL offers a rigorous foundation program to the weaker students to bring them to a certain level so that they can successfully adopt the standard level of the curriculum.

DELL has set its mark in the academic arena shortly after its establishment in the last quarter of 2002 with the beginning of the classes from January 1, 2003.

Message from the Chairman

Welcome to the Department of English Language and Literature (DELL) at Premier University, Chittagong.

Since its inception, our department has been a cornerstone of the Faculty of Arts, dedicated to fostering a rich intellectual environment where language and literature serve as catalysts for personal and professional growth. Our mission is to produce graduates who are not only proficient in English but are also critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, and empathetic global citizens.

In alignment with global academic standards and the directives of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, we have fully transitioned to an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum. This student-centric approach ensures that our BA (Honours) and MA programs are focused on clearly defined learning outcomes. By integrating core literary studies with linguistics, cultural studies, and communicative skills, we prepare our students to meet the evolving demands of the 21st-century job market.

I am also pleased to share that our B.A. (Honours) in English program is rigorously designed to meet the quality assurance standards of the Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC). The accreditation reflects our dedication to maintaining academic excellence, transparency, and continuous improvement in our pedagogical practices.
